GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) β Troy Merritt has earned his first PGA Tour win at the Quicken Loans National near Washington, DC. The 29-year old closed out a 4-under 67 with a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to wind up at 18 under par. Runner-up Rickie Fowler finished three shots back after shooting a 69.
TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) β Top-ranked Inbee Park closed with a 7-under 65 to win the Women’s British Open and become the seventh golfer to capture four different majors. The LPGA is calling it a career Grand Slam, but Park hasn’t won the Evian Championship since it became a major in 2013. Park has now won seven majors and six of the last 14.
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) β Matt Kenseth won the Sprint Cup race at Pocono when Kyle Busch ran out of fuel on the final lap in an attempt to earn his fourth straight win. Busch and Joey Logano were trying to conserve fuel late in the race in an effort capture the win, but Logano went empty with three laps to go and Busch watched helplessly as Kenseth tracked him down and roared by. Brad Keselowski finished second with Jeff Gordon third.
OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) β American Pharoah turned on the speed in the stretch and easily won the million-dollar Haskell Invitational in his first race since sweeping the Triple Crown. With a record crowd of 60,983 cheering him at Monmouth Park, American Pharoah came out of the final turn with a clear lead and cruised to a 2 1/4-length victory without urging from jockey Victor Espinoza. Sent off at odds of 1-10, American Pharoah became the shortest price in Haskell history, returning $2.20 for a $2 win bet.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) β The Seahawks have released veteran defensive tackle Tony McDaniel to save salary cap space after signing quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner to contract extensions. The move will save the club between $2.5 and $3 million against the salary cap. McDaniel spent two seasons with the Seahawks, starting 29 of 32 regular-season games and five of six postseason games.
