Kerrick Trial: CSI, Homicide Detective Testify

CHARLOTTE, NC — Before the dash cam video, a crime scene investigator and the homicide detective who identified Ferrell both testified. WCCB Charlotte’s Amy Cowman continues our trial team coverage with more on Wednesday’s testimony.
A crime scene investigator documented evidence from the gunshots fired at the scene.
“Item one was a discharged shell casing,” said Investigator Karen Nyx.
Then CMPD homicide detective Matt Hefner testified to being the first on the scene to identify Ferrell.
“With gloved hands, I had latex gloves on, I stood over Ferrell’s body, checked his pockets for a wallet, removed the wallet from his back pocket,” said Det. Matt Hefner, showing his school ID, Florida license and other cards to compare with the man who was shot.
The defense cross examined the detective, asking about Kerrick’s condition after the shooting.
“When you got there, you saw Officer Kerrick to be treated by MEDIC?” asked a defense attorney.
“I did,” responded Hefner.
Once again the judge dismissed the jury while the defense objected to the state showing a graphic picture of Ferrell’s dead body. In the end, the state was allowed to show the jury, passed one by one instead of up on the big screen, and the judge allowed Ferrell’s family to leave the courtroom while it was being shown.
