CHICAGO (AP) — Two teams battling it out for the final wildcard berth in the National League are playing this afternoon in Chicago as the Cubs entertain the Giants. Chicago starts the day with a half-game lead over the defending world champs for that final spot. Last night the Cubs won the opening game of the weekend set, 5-4.

NEW YORK (AP) — The American League East-leading Yankees are playing host to the second place Blue Jays this evening. As a new day begins, the Yankees top the Jays by 4 ½ games with three games set for the teams this weekend. Overall they have 13 games left between themselves this season.

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The second round of the Bridgestone Invitational is under way in Akron, Ohio. Danny Lee completed play yesterday in first place after an opening round 5-under-65.

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — The first round of the Champions Tour event in Calgary, Alberta, is today. A year ago the winner was Fred Couples who beat Billy Andrade (AHN’-drayd) in a playoff. Along with Couples the field includes Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimenez (AHN’-hehl hee-MEHN’-ehz).

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Induction ceremonies for the class of 2015 for the Pro Football Hall of Fame are being held tomorrow in Canton, Ohio. This year’s class consists of former players Jerome Bettis (BEHT’-ihs), Tim Brown, Charles Haley, Junior Seau (SAY’-ow), Will Shields and Mick Tingelhoff. Also going are executives Ron Wolf and Bill Polian.
