CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte water is now safe to drink after a quarterly test found an elevated level of a chemical in the water system.

Officials say higher levels of disinfectant by-products of chlorine were found in eight of the 12 sampling locations.  Charlotte Water says our hot, dry summer is creating more bacteria in the water.

“We are really at the mercy of the drought,” says Duke Energy spokesperson Erin Culbert.  “There is not just the fresh water coming in to be able to enhance that turnover in the lakes.  But we would expect to see drastic improvement over the coming months as we get more rainfall.”

Charlotte Water says it will continue to take actions to assure water quality standards are met.
