CHARLOTTE, NC — 539 teacher assistants working for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools could be out of a job. The General Assembly has yet to adopt a budget for 2015-16, leaving people’s livelihoods on the line, and school districts across the state without funding for many positions.
Without specific language in a continuous resolution from the state, CMS would not have the funding to pay those 539 TAs. CMS Board Chair Mary McCray calls the lack of action in Raleigh a serious situation.
“We have done our part, and now it’s time for the state legislatures to step up, stop the partisan politics,” she said. “Because this is affecting our schools, and we have got to get on about the business of making our North Carolina students shine once again.”
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is projected to add more than 2,400 new students this year. The first day of classes for CMS is Monday, August 24th.
