SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Ron Rivera says he’ll be paying close attention to his team’s wide receivers and defensive ends when the Panthers open the preseason tonight at Buffalo. Carolina is deeper than it has ever been at wide receiver under Rivera, which has made for good competition at training camp and tough decisions ahead.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia wide receiver T.J. Thorpe will miss about 10 weeks after breaking a bone in his right shoulder. Virginia coach Mike London said Thorpe underwent surgery Thursday, a day after sustaining the injury during a team scrimmage. Thorpe transferred to Virginia after earning a degree in exercise and sport science at North Carolina.

TORONTO (AP) — Former Clemson player Billy Kennerly won the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship yesterday, closing with a 2-under 70 at Weston Golf & Country Club for a six-stroke victory. The 22-year-old Kennerly, from Alpharetta, Georgia, finished at 12-under 275.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Atlanta Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant has a sprained shoulder and is expected to miss tonight’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans. Trufant missed his second straight day of practice yesterday. Coach Dan Quinn says he’s “leaning” toward holding Trufant out of the game.
