LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) β Regan Smith bumped his way past Alex Tagliani in the Carousel a turn from the finish Saturday to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Driving for JR Motorsports, Smith raced to his first victory of the year and fifth overall. Ty Dillon was third, followed by Buescher and Chase Elliott.
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) β Kyle Busch passed Ryan Blaney with four laps remaining and won the NASCAR Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. Blaney took the lead with six laps remaining after a restart, but Busch eventually moved back in front for his 44th victory on the series. He has won each of his two Truck starts this year. Erik Jones finished third in the 100-lap, 200-mile race.
Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin figures an extended trip during the preseason might help his team win on the road this year. The Dolphins will head to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Tuesday for two days of joint practice with the Carolina Panthers before the teams meet in an exhibition game Saturday night in Charlotte. Panthers coach Ron Rivera proposed the extended get-together, and Philbin decided to give it a try in part because the Dolphins play seven of their first nine games this season away from Miami.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β If Steve Spurrier expected to hone in on a starting quarterback Saturday, South Carolina’s scrimmage barely helped. None of the team’s four passers vying for the starting job stood out in a poor overall performance. Spurrier said quarterbacks Connor Mitch, Perry Orth, Michael Scarnecchia and Lorenzo Nunez were slow and hesitant to fire balls into receivers. Redshirt freshman Scarnecchia had the best statistics, hitting 11 of 14 passes for 81 yards. He was also the only one of the quartet without an interception.
