Police: Woman arrested after abducting 10-month-old

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– A 10-month-old is back home safe after police say she was abducted Saturday afternoon.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police department responded to a child abduction call for service at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Fawnbrook Lane.

When officers arrived a woman said she was approached by a stranger who asked if she could hold the woman’s 10-month-old daughter.  Police say the woman let the stranger hold her daughter and then all of a sudden the stranger took off running with the child and got into a vehicle.

Police in the Freedom Division located the suspect and 10-month-old in a parking lot in the 3200 block of Wilkinson Boulevard.

Police identified the suspect as Sharlornai Matai Reid, 22, and arrested her on an unrelated larceny warrant out of Buncombe County.

Reid was transported to Carolinas Medical Center for medical treatment.

Detectives obtained warrants for child abduction and assault with a deadly weapon which will be served on Reid at the Mecklenburg County Jail once she has been medically cleared.

Anyone with information about this case or the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
