Bucs still perfect against Mets
UNDATED (AP) β The New York Mets have a comfortable lead in the National League East despite being a combined 0-12 against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs, the NL’s wild-card leaders.
The Pirates improved to 5-0 versus the Mets this season by scoring twice in the 14th inning to earn a 5-3 triumph in New York. Pinch-hitter Chris Stewart and Sean Rodriguez hit RBI singles after the Bucs blew a 3-0 lead in the seventh.
Aramis (ah-RAH’-mihs) Ramirez and Gregory Polanco homered as the Pirates won their third in a row to stay six games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals.
Juan Uribe (yoo-REE’-bay) and Michael Conforto went deep in the seventh for the Mets, who have dropped two straight since taking 11 of 13. They still lead their division by 4 Β½ games over Washington.
In Saturday’s other major league games:
β The Giants did the Mets a favor as Matt Duffy drove in four runs to lead San Francisco’s 12-6 assault on the Nationals. Duffy delivered a three-run double while the Giants scored six times in the third to take a 6-2 lead. Brandon Belt, Buster Posey and Tomlinson added two RBIs apiece for the Giants.
β Enrique Hernandez smacked a three-run homer and three other Dodgers added solo shots in an 8-3 rout of Cincinnati. Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul PWEEG), Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez also went deep to back Brett Anderson, who is 7-7 after allowing three runs in six innings. The Dodgers continue to pace the NL West by 2 Β½ games over San Francisco.
β John Lackey pitched into the ninth as St. Louis dumped Miami 6-2. Lackey gave up nine hits but just two runs in helping the Cardinals become the first team with 75 wins this season. Mark Reynolds blasted a two-run homer and rookie Randal Grichuk (GRIH’-chuk) added a solo blast in the Cardinals’ eighth victory in 10 games. Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki singled in the first inning for his 4,192nd career hit in the major leagues and Japan, passing Ty Cobb’s total that ranks second in history.
β Jorge Soler (soh-LEHR’) had two RBIs and the Cubs picked up their ninth consecutive victory by downing the White Sox 6-3. Jake Arrieta improved to 14-6 by holding the White Sox to two earned runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Cubs have won 15 of 16 since July 29 to take firm hold of the second National League wild-card berth.
β The Yankees lead the AL East by 1 Β½ games over the Blue Jays after beating Toronto for the second straight day, this time 4-1. Masahiro Tanaka (mah-sah-HEE’-roh tah-NAH’-tah) scattered five hits in his first complete game in more than a year, blanking the Jays after the fifth inning. Mark Teixeira (the-SHEHR’-uh) supplied the tiebreaking solo homer and had two RBIs for the Bombers.
β Detroit blew a 1-0 lead in the ninth before Victor Martinez hit a tiebreaking, RBI double in a three-run 11th that pushed the Tigers past Houston 4-2. J.D. Martinez and Tyler Collins followed Victor Martinez with back-to-back run-scoring singles. The Astros extended the game on Preston Tucker’s solo blast in the ninth after Justin Verlander blanked them on three hits over seven innings.
β The Royals crushed the Los Angeles Angels 9-4 in Kansas City to keep their 12-game lead in the AL Central. Salvador Perez fueled a six-run second with a solo homer and an RBI double. Jarrod Dyson added three RBIs and Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh) allowed just one run in eight innings to help the Royals keep the Angels 2 Β½ games behind the AL West-leading Astros.
β Baltimore pulled out a 4-3 win over Oakland on a walk-off homer by Chris Davis in the bottom of the ninth. Davis belted a two-run shot in the fourth before winning it with his 34th homer of the season. Gerarado Parra also went deep for the Birds.
β Colby Lewis picked up his 13th win and Texas banged out three homers in a 12-4 pounding of Tampa Bay. Lewis needed 111 pitches to complete six innings, but he held the Rays to a run and five hits. Adrian Beltre (BEHL’-tray) launched a three-run homer, Chris Gimenez (JIH’-meh-nehz) added a two-run blast in three RBIs, and Shin-Soo Choo contributed a two-run shot and three ribbies.
β Tyler Duffey picked up his first major league win by holding Cleveland to one hit while fanning seven over six innings of Minnesota’s 4-1 victory over the Indians. Duffey had a no-hitter until Francisco Lindor lined a one-out double in the sixth. Eddie Rosario and Chris Herrmann hit solo homers in the fifth inning before Brian Dozier’s two-run blast put the Twins ahead 4-0 in the eighth.
β Seattle ace Felix Hernandez was rocked for a career-high 10 runs before leaving in the third inning of a 22-10 loss at Boston. Jackie Bradley Jr. homered twice, doubled three times and collected seven RBIs as part of the Red Sox’s 26-hit attack. Pablo Sandoval and Alejandro De Aza also homered for the Red Sox, who have scored 37 runs in the first two games of the series.
β Arizona doubled up Atlanta 8-4 as David Peralta (peh-RAHL’-tah) hit a solo homer and drove in three. Paul Goldschmidt added two hits and two RBIs to back a solid performance by Patrick Corbin, who struck out eight while yielding just three hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings.
β Jean Segura snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the seventh before Milwaukee completed a 4-2 triumph against Philadelphia. Scooter Gennett provided a pair of RBI singles for the Brewers.
β Pinch-hitter Brett Wallace had a tiebreaking RBI single as San Diego took advantage of Colorado catcher Nick Hundley’s throwing error to score three runs in the ninth inning of a 7-5 comeback win over the Rockies. The Rockies have dropped six in a row.
MLB-RED SOX-FARRELL
Farrell visit with Red Sox
BOSTON (AP) β Manager John Farrell visited the Red Sox a day after announcing he is taking a medical leave for the rest of the season to deal with lymphoma.
The 53-year-old Farrell was in his office Saturday morning and joked with the players and interim manager Torey Lovullo.
Farrell said Friday he has a “highly curable” form of cancer that was discovered when he had hernia surgery on Monday in Detroit. He said he’ll begin chemotheraphy treatment next week.
PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Great Day in Sheboygan
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) β Jason Day is the leader through three rounds of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, while Jordan Spieth (speeth) is in contention for his third major title of the year.
Day fired a 6-under 66 that included four birdies and an eagle in a six-hole stretch, beginning with the par-3 ninth hole. He also had a double-bogey on 15 and a pair of bogeys on the front nine before climbing to 15-under for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Spieth.
Day got the first of his nine top-10 major finishes at Whistling Straits five years ago, and will try to wrap up his first major on the same course Sunday. Hot on his heels is Spieth, the reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion.
Spieth birdied six of his final eight holes for a 7-under 65 and a 13-under total, two strokes off the lead.
Brandon Grace is at minus-12 following a 64, one shot off the record for a major tournament. Grace played bogey-free golf to move into a tie for third with Justin Rose.
Matt Jones began the round leading the tournament by two strokes over Day before carding a 1-over 73. Jones had a miserable end to his round, getting bogeys on 15 and 16 before a double-bogey on 17.
Jones is tied for sixth with Tony Finau at 10-under, five shots off the lead and one behind Martin Kaymer (KY’-mur).
LPGA-CAMBIA PORTLAND CLASSIC
Canadian teenager in front
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) β Canadian teen Brooke Henderson owns a five-stroke lead through three rounds of the Cambia Portland Classic.
The 17-year-old Henderson is 19-under following a 7-under 65, tying the tournament 54-hole record.
Morgan Pressel was second after a 65.
NASCAR-BUSCH CRASH
Kyle Busch wrecks in practice
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) β Kyle Busch slid onto the grass during NASCAR Sprint Cup practice, damaging his No. 18 Toyota.
He was sixth in qualifying, but going to the backup car will force him to start from the back in Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway.
Busch has made a remarkable comeback after missing the first 11 races of the Sprint Cup season with a broken leg and foot. He’s won four times since then and holds down 30th place in the driver’s standings.
He needs to end the season in the top 30 in order to qualify for the Chase.
NFL-INJURIES
Jets’ Wilkerson has setback…Jags lose two starters
UNDATED (AP) β New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson has had a “minor” setback with his sore left hamstring and remains day-to-day. Wilkerson did not play in the Jets’ preseason-opening 23-3 loss at Detroit on Thursday night, and isn’t sure he’ll play against Atlanta at home next Friday.
Elsewhere:
β Jacksonville tight end Julius Thomas and safety Johnathan Cyprien are out likely at least rest of the preseason after sustaining injuries in Friday night’s preseason win over Pittsburgh. Thomas has a broken right hand, while Cyprien broke a finger on his right hand.
β Washington tight end Logan Paulsen needs surgery for a turf toe injury and will miss the entire season. The team already is without tight end Niles Paul, who is out for the season after fracturing an ankle in Thursday’s preseason opener against Cleveland.
β New York Giants rookie Mykkele Thompson will miss the season with an Achilles tendon injury, and fellow safety Landon Collins is out indefinitely with a sprained medical collateral ligament. Both were hurt in the preseason loss at Cincinnati Friday.
β Chicago rookie receiver Kevin White will need surgery for a stress fracture in his leg and will miss at least half of the regular season. White was the Bears’ first-round pick.
β Browns receiver Terrelle (teh-REHL’) Pryor is back at practice after missing more than a week with a hamstring injury.
