Kerrick Trial: Gallery Filled With Spectators On Both Sides Of Courtroom

CHARLOTTE, NC — It’s not just the state, defense, and family members who are waiting for a verdict.  Many curious and concerned citizens have been in the court room since the beginning.

They are here for different reasons, and on different sides of the courtroom.  Pat Phillips felt the need to support the Kerrick family from day one.

“They had charged Officer Kerrick with this crime and I felt it was so fast and so unjust,” said Phillips.

On the other side is Teresa McCormick-Dunlap, who has sat day in and day out with the Ferrell family.

“I can’t really complain about the things that are happening unless I get involved and involved in the change, and look at the system from inside out and see what the problem is,” said McCormick-Dunlap.

McCormick-Dunlap says she feels the state did a good job in a difficult situation, while Phillips says she feels the defense case was as strong as it could be.  Now it is up to the jury.

“I feel very confident and comfortable that jurors are taking time they need to make a well thought it decision they’re not being hasty,” said McCormick-Dunlap.

“I thought it was going to be a win for him, but the more evidence they are asking for, I feel like some are struggling and may not bend at this point.  I think it might be hung jury,” said Phillips.

Both women say they will sit and wait in the courtroom until the jury comes to the verdict.  After that, they just pray for both families and for peace in the city of Charlotte.
