WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Woods claims share of lead at Wyndham after shooting 65

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) β€” Tiger Woods shot a 5-under 65 on Friday to share the second-round lead in the Wyndham Championship.

Woods joined rookie Tom Hoge at 11-under 129. Hoge shot a 67.

The sport’s biggest name put himself in position to contend for his first victory in more than two years, one that would send him into the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Woods followed his best round since 2013 β€” a first-day 64 β€” with one almost as good.

He made his big move up the leaderboard on the back nine, with birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 and eagled the par-5 15th for a share of the lead.

LLWS-SOUTH CAROLINA-RHODE ISLAND

Edmondson throws no-hitter, hits homer for South Carolina

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) β€” Alex Edmondson threw his second no-hitter in eight days and hit a two-run homer in the first inning to help Taylors, South Carolina, beat Cranston, Rhode Island, 7-1 on Friday in the state’s first ever victory in the Little League World Series.

Edmondson struck out 15 a week after striking out 12 in his no-hitter in the Southeast championship.

Throwing around 80 mph, the right-hander struck out the side four times. He struck out 10 straight between the third and sixth innings in South Carolina’s first LLWS game since 1950.

Edmondson also had an RBI single and was 3 for 4 at the plate.

Terrence Gist hit long home run to the top of the hill beyond left field in the third inning, giving South Carolina a 3-1 lead. Ben Tumblin and Gage Laymon added RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings, and South Carolina finished with 13 hits.

On Sunday, South Carolina will play the Missouri-Pennsylvania winner.

Rhode Island scored its lone run in the first when David Marchetti walked and came home on two wild pitches and a dropped third strike.

CLEMSON-LAKIP

Clemson’s Swinney suspends kicker Lakip 3 games

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) β€” Clemson kicker Ammon Lakip will sit out the first three games of the season because of an offseason drug arrest.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Lakip, who was indefinitely suspended since June, will miss games against Wofford on Sept. 5, Appalachian State on Sept. 12 and Louisville on Sept. 17. Swinney said Lakip could return when Notre Dame comes to Clemson on Oct. 3.

The 21-year-old Lakip was arrested on June 6 and charged with misdemeanor cocaine possession, driving under the influence and refusal to take a blood, breath or urine test.

Lakip made 21 of 28 field goals last season. He struggled early, going 1 of 4 in losses at Georgia and Florida State last season.

Swinney said walk-on Greg Huegel will be the starting kicker after outperforming scholarship sophomore Alex Spence in camp.

DOLPHINS-PANTHERS SCRIMMAGE

Panthers, Dolphins wrap up practices, move on from injuries

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) β€” The Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers wrapped up a productive, injury-free joint practice β€” a welcomed change considering both teams lost starters to season-ending knee injuries the day before.

The Panthers began adapting to the difficult notion they’ll be without Kelvin Benjamin, their top playmaker in the passing game, leaving them without a clear No. 1 receiver. The Dolphins lost safety Louis Delmas, their emotional leader in the secondary, when he tore his right ACL just minutes after Benjamin left on a cart with a torn left ACL on Wednesday.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he addressed Benjamin’s injury at a team meeting on Wednesday night, telling players not to lose faith in the season.

Rivera says, “It’s not about us being one player. It’s about us being a team.”
