WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) β Second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa beat 2014 finalist Jerzy Janowicz of Poland 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals in the Winston-Salem Open.
In a battle of big hitters β both players are 6-foot-8 β the 15th-ranked Anderson served 17 aces, and took advantage of a service break in the second set to improve to 3-0 against the 16th-seeded Janowicz.
Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu got a service break in the final game of the third set to beat South Korea’s Hyeon Chung 7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5.
Later Wednesday at Wake Forest Tennis Center, France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, ranked 19th in the world and the No. 3 seed, will face 13th-seeded Steve Johnson, the only American remaining in the tournament.
Also, sixth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil will play 11th-seeded Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic; and No. 8 seed Borna Coric of Croatia will meet Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman.
