DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander came close to getting the third no-hitter of his career last night. He took a no-no into the top of the ninth against the Angels before surrendering a double to lead-off hitter Chris Iannetta (eye-ah-NET’-uh). Verlander proceeded to close the game out for a 5-0 win.

BEIJING (AP) — Jamaica’s Usain (yoo-SAYN’) Bolt has completed a sweep of the sprint events at the world track and field championships in Beijing. As was the case last Sunday when he won the 100 meters, he finished first in front of American Justin Gatlin in the 200. His winning time was 19.55 seconds.
