Prominent Charlotte Pastor Dies in Accidental Shooting

CHARLOTTE, NC – A congregation is in mourning after the sudden passing of a well-known Charlotte pastor. Bishop Phillip Davis of Nations Ford Community Church died Saturday after an accidental shooting.

His congregation, expressing their grief on the church’s Facebook page.. Dasmin wrote, “Can’t believe that he’s really gone. Unreal, but RIP Bishop Phillip Davis. You were the greatest. Taught me a lot about life. A true preacher and mentor!”

Investigators say they found Davis dead inside his Weddington home around 1:00pm Saturday. They believe he accidently shot himself while cleaning his gun.

“He was the first one here. And he was the first one to pray over you. And if you needed him, he was a phone call away,” says church member Jacinda Garabito.

Members returned for regular services Sunday – saddened, but with a sense of appreciation for a legacy they say will live on.

“Today is just really that outlet, saying it’s OK to grieve. You know this is something that’s hard for all of us,” Garabito says.

Most recently, Davis was one of several Charlotte leaders involved in efforts to engage the community during the trial of CMPD Officer Wes Kerrick.

He spoke at an Arms Around Charlotte rally and gathered with demonstrators in an effort to keep the peace.

Congressman Robert Pittenger released a statement following the death of Bishop Davis. It reads in part, “Bishop Davis had a big heart for God and a great vision for restoring families. He worked hard to demonstrate the love of Christ to those in need and was passionate regarding racial reconciliation.”

Davis leaves behind a wife, three children, and three grandchildren.
