Phase Two Of Matthews’ $32 Million Project Has Begun

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County and the town of Matthews have started the second half of their $32 million project.

The project is the completion of the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex, a tournament-caliber athletic facility in Matthews.

Since the first phase of the Sportplex’s completion, the building has host a variety soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, and rugby events. Phase two reportedly involves building 12 lighted sports fields, including a 2,700-seat championship grass field. 

“With the championship field, we’re trying to create something unique that can be a really grand, regionally strong destination facility,” said Andrew Pack, practice leader for higher education and athletics at Woolpert. “When it’s complete, the site can host U.S. Youth Championship Soccer tournaments and other high-profile sporting events.”
