CMS Receives Good, Bad News in End-of-Year Report

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools got some good, and bad, news in the annual North Carolina report on school performance.
25 of 160 schools went up a grade. 21 dropped. 12 percent earned an A or A-plus.
The CMS graduation rate is up to 88 percent, but test scores indicate students fell short in reading skills.
“We have to apply that same intentional, strategic focus to our literacy across grades 3 through high school in order to get where we need to go, and we have put that in place,” said CMS Superintendent Ann Clark.
Test scores indicate that roughly half the high school students in CMS lack the English, math and science skills to be ready for college or skilled jobs.
