CHARLOTTE, NC — The man who confessed to murdering nine people inside an historic black church in Charleston will plead guilty, if the death penalty is taken off the table. Dylann Roof’s attorneys offered up that deal during a hearing Wednesday.
Roof opened fire inside Emanuel AME Church in June, because he says he wanted to start a race war. The judge also heard arguments on whether 911 calls and crime scene photos should be released to the media.
“I see no benefit or no reason for the news media to have access to those photographs that are showing these people lying dead in pools of blood on the church floor,” said Judge J.C. Nicholson
The judge ultimately decided to release transcripts of the 911 calls and certain pictures, but did not say when.
Also, the friend Roof stayed with before the murders is under investigation by the feds for reportedly lying to law enforcement. An official says Joey Meek may have known about Roof’s plan before or after the Charleston murders, and did not report it to police.
