NFL-SCHEDULE

An NFC East matchup tonight

EAST RUTHERFOD, N.J. (AP) β€” Statistically the numbers point to a win by the Giants tonight at home against the Redskins. New York has won the last four games in the series, quarterback Eli Manning last year was 51 of 73 for 550 yards against Washington and the Giants have dominated the series, winning 97 games against just 65 win for the visiting ‘Skins.

That said, this is a longstanding NFC East rivalry and the Redskins come in off a win over the Rams when quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 23 of 27 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. The Giants on the other hand are desperate for a win after dropping their first two games, to the Cowboys by a point and the Falcons by four.

MLB-SCHEDULE

Texas looks to extend lead

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Texas Rangers can put some more breathing space between themselves and the Houston Astros in the American League West this afternoon. The Rangers, who lead the Astros by three games, complete a series in Oakland before heading to Houston for a huge three-game weekend series. The Astros have the day off.

In other afternoon play the Dodgers are hosting the Diamondbacks with Clayton Kershaw toeing the rubber for the home team. Kershaw is trying to augment his resume for a fourth NL Cy Young Award as he enters the game with a 1.17 ERA in 14 starts since the end of June. He is up against teammate Zack Greinke (GREHN’-kee), who was scratched from his start Wednesday with a sore calf, and Cubs ace Jake Arrieta (ehr-ee-ET’-uh) for the coveted pitching prize.

In Denver this afternoon the Rockies are playing host to the Pirates and the Orioles complete a series at Washington.

It will be an emotional night in New York as the Yankees honor the late Yogi Berra. The Hall of Famer died earlier this week at the age of 90. The Yankees will wear a No. 8 patch on their sleeves for the rest of the season. And oh yes, the game against the White Sox is important for the New Yorkers as they trail the Blue Jays by 3 Β½ games in the American League East race.

New York’s other team, the Mets, is apparently headed to the playoffs and tonight they are home to the Reds. Rookie Steven Matz is back on the mound for the Mets and will make his fourth start since coming off the disabled list. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA and could play an important role in the postseason for the NL East leaders if they hang on to win the division. He’s won twice since recovering from a partially torn muscle near his armpit.

The rest of the schedule tonight has the Rays playing the Red Sox in Boston, Miami home to the Phillies, the Brewers in St. Louis, the Twins hosting the Indians, Seattle at Kansas City and the Padres home to the Giants.

NBA-HAWKS

Richardson retires

ATLANTA (AP) β€” Jason Richardson is calling it a career after 13 years in the NBA. The 34-year-old swingman signed with the Atlanta Hawks in August after playing in just 19 games with the Philadelphia 76ers last season because of a knee injury.

Richardson also played with Golden State, Phoenix, Orlando and Charlotte.

PGA-TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Who will get the big payoff?

ATLANTA (AP) β€” The final FedEx Cup playoff event is the Tour Championship in Atlanta and the first round is being played today. The top-30 in the FedEx standings qualified for the season-ending event and a win by one of the top five, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth (speeth), Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson or Bubba Watson, would mean the $10 million top prize.

Speith and Day are playing in the final pairing of the day with Fowler and Stenson teeing off just before them, and right before them are Watson and Zach Johnson.

The Presidents Cup takes place Oct. 8-11 in South Korea and then, believe it or not, the 2015-16 season starts the following week with the Frys.com Open in Napa, California.
