Pope Francis immediately dove into the whirlpool of U.S. politics Thursday, using his first direct address to the nation to weigh in on deeply divisive issues.
In Washington, the Pope spoke out against the death penalty, called for greater action to combat climate change and urged lawmakers to work together to help the powerless: namely, the poor and the millions of undocumented immigrants from around the world.
“We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation,” he said.
The Pope’s words were so moving, House Speaker John Boehner even broke down in tears. Pope Francis will visit the United Nations, as well as the 9/11 memorial and museum on Friday.
