EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) β The New York Giants opened the NFL season with two straight losses before Eli Manning threw for 279 yards and a pair of long fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 32-21 victory against Washington. Manning connected with Ruben Randle for a 41-yard touchdown with 3:21 remaining after hitting Odell Beckham Jr. for a 30-yard score early in the fourth. The Giants’ defense kept Washington out of the end zone until Kirk Cousins hit Chris Thompson for a four-yard TD with 3:40 to play.
KANSAS CITY, (AP) β The Kansas City Royals have clinched their first division title in 30 years by pounding Seattle 10-4. Eric Hosmer tied it with a solo shot in the fifth for the AL Central champs, one inning before Lorenzo Cain put Kansas City ahead to stay with a two-run single. Mike Moustakas (moos-TAH’-kahs) was 3-for-3 with a solo homer, three RBIs and three runs scored to pad the Royals’ attack.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) β No. 22 Wisconsin will need to get its running game going without starting tailback Corey Clement. Coach Paul Chryst says that the junior will miss four to six weeks to have sports hernia surgery. Clement missed the last two games, and he played sparingly in the season opener against Alabama after hurting his groin in practice.
ATLANTA (AP) β Henrik Stenson opened with a 7-under 63 to take the lead in the first round of the PGA’s season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. Stenson was unstoppable for 12 holes until he settled for a 7-under 63 for a two-shot lead over Paul Casey. Stenson is No. 4 in the FedEx Cup standings and only has to win this week to claim the $10 million bonus.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Michael Waltrip Racing has filed an appeal of the championship-crippling penalties levied against Clint Bowyer’s team for using improperly-installed parts in his Toyota last weekend. Crew chief Billy Scott’s three-race suspension has been deferred, and the appeal will be heard Wednesday. Bowyer was docked 25 points, dropping him to last in the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.
