RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) β North Carolina State has dismissed running back Shadrach Thornton from the team after another round of legal troubles. Coach Dave Doeren announced the decision Wednesday. That came less than a day after Raleigh police arrested Thornton after he struck a pedestrian while riding a moped and left the scene.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly will miss his third straight game Sunday against Tampa Bay with a concussion. Coach Ron Rivera listed Kuechly as out yesterday on the team’s injury report, along with wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery (ankle) and offensive linemen Amini Silatolu (ankle).
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) β North Carolina will honor late ESPN broadcaster and alumnus Stuart Scott as it kicks off the basketball season. The school says it will induct Scott on Oct. 23 into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame, which is based in the UNC School of Media and Journalism.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β An appeals committee has upheld penalties against Clint Bowyer and Michael Waltrip Racing that effectively ends any shot Bowyer had at winning the Sprint Cup championship. The three-person National Motorsports Appeals Panel on Wednesday ruled NASCAR was correct in penalizing the No. 15 team for an illegally modified part two weeks ago at Chicagoland Speedway.
