JCSU Drops CIAA Game to Bowie State, 34-21

CHARLOTTE, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — Bowie State (4-1, 2-0) used a third-quarter defensive touchdown to bolt past Johnson C. Smith (1-4, 0-2) on a soggy Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex.

JCSU led 21-20 with the ball late in the third quarter when a Jamal Francois fumble was recovered and returned for a 42-yard touchdown by Heleaince Gates to shift the momentum back to Bowie State. A fourth quarter JCSU pass was intercepted by Bowie State which set up a 10-yard TD run by Stephen Willis two plays later to seal the game’s fate.

Johnson C. Smith turned the ball over five times in the loss.

Bowie State quarterback Matthew Goggans also threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, JCSU got a spark from their special teams. A 76-yard kick return by Carlo Thomas led to a 1-yard TD run by Tromecio Summers to cut the lead in half. The Golden Bulls turned a pair of BSU turnovers into points later in the second quarter. Hardman-Santiag recovered a Goggan fumble setting up a Jordan Lane to Roderick Carter 24-yard TD pass one play later. BSU’s Goggans fumbled on the next drive and returned 42-yards by Daron Wright to give JCSU a 21-20 lead 39-seconds before half.

JCSU plays at Winston Salem State (1-4, 1-1) next Saturday at 1:30.
