IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Three students have serious injuries after a box truck ran into a concrete post, trapping about two dozen people underneath a collapsed awning outside the school.
It happened around 2:15 Saturday afternoon at North Iredell High on Raider Road. The truck filled with band quipment from South Iredell high hit the post, then tried to back up, and that is when the awning fell.
Twenty-five students and parents were trapped underneath for short-time, and were taken to a local hospital. At least one student was transferred to Baptist hospital in Winston-Salem with very serious injuries, according to emergency workers.
The students and parents are believed to be from South Iredell High School. A few students with minor injuries are from North Iredell. They were at the school for a regional band competition, which has been canceled, according to the superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools.
Sixteen schools were invited to the competition, which was supposed to be held on the football field. But, because of the weather, had been moved indoors. Students and parents from four local schools were there when the incident happened.
