HORNETS-KIDD-GILCHRIST

Hornets’ Kidd-Gilchrist out indefinitely, has torn labrum

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” Charlotte Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is expected to miss an extended period of time after an MRI revealed he has a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

The team made the announcement Monday, but would not say if he needed surgery or how long he will be out.

On Sunday, the team announced he had a separated shoulder, but an MRI upon returning to Charlotte confirmed additional a torn labrum too.

The Hornets say Kidd-Gilchrist will meet with team orthopedist Dr. Marcus Cook on Tuesday to determine the next steps for the recovery and rehabilitation of his shoulder.

Kidd-Gilchrist suffered the injury in Saturday’s preseason game at Orlando in the second quarter when he landed on the floor.

Charlotte was 28-29 last season when Kidd-Gilchrist played and 5-20 without him.

T25-LSU-S CAROLINA

School says South Carolina game with No. 7 LSU still on

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β€” Athletic officials at the University of South Carolina say next Saturday’s game against No. 7 LSU is still on despite flooding in portions of the city.

The school said in a statement Monday that all parties are continuing to monitor the situation. Both South Carolina and LSU are in contact with the Southeastern Conference about conditions.

Many streets and roadways in Columbia were shut down on Sunday because of floodwaters.

The game is scheduled for a noon kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium.

FALCONS-FAST START

Quinn getting message of starting fast through to Falcons

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) β€” Coach Dan Quinn has been trying to get the Atlanta Falcons to start games fast.

His message seems to be taking effect.

In Sunday’s blowout win over Houston, the Falcons did as he instructed, avoiding a sluggish first half by taking care of the ball on offense and taking it away on defense.

Not surprisingly, Quinn’s halftime talk to the team was nothing like last week’s when Atlanta trailed by 11 at Dallas.

This time, the Falcons were up 28-0 and turnovers β€” no miscues by the offense, an interception by Jonathan Babineaux and two fumble recoveries by Desmond Trufant β€” were the reason why.

It was all the proof Quinn needed heading into this week as the Falcons (4-0) host Washington (2-2).

NBA PLAYER STABBED

NYC trial starts for NBA player charged in clash with police

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The trial of a professional basketball player arrested earlier this year outside a New York City nightclub following a confrontation with police officers has begun.

Opening statements are scheduled to begin Tuesday in Manhattan Criminal Court for the trial of the Atlanta Hawks’ Thabo Sefolosha (sehf-ah-LOH’-shuh). A jury was picked Monday.

The Swiss national has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor obstructing government administration, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges.

Prosecutors say the guard-forward was combative and ignored their orders to clear an established crime scene following an earlier stabbing outside the trendy 1Oak Club in Chelsea.

He suffered a season-ending leg fracture in the struggle.

Sefolosha’s attorney Alex Spiro suggested during jury selection that his client may have been mouthy in the confrontation but said no crime was committed.
