NEW YORK (AP) β The trial of a professional basketball player arrested earlier this year outside a New York City nightclub following a confrontation with police officers has begun.
Opening statements are scheduled to begin Tuesday in Manhattan Criminal Court for the trial of the Atlanta Hawks’ Thabo Sefolosha (sehf-ah-LOH’-shuh). A jury was picked Monday.
The Swiss national has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor obstructing government administration, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges.
Prosecutors say the guard-forward was combative and ignored their orders to clear an established crime scene following an earlier stabbing outside the trendy 1Oak Club in Chelsea.
He suffered a season-ending leg fracture in the struggle.
Sefolosha’s attorney Alex Spiro suggested during jury selection that his client may have been mouthy in the confrontation but said no crime was committed.
