ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) β€” A central New York pet hospice once supported by Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities has been shut down after a ruling of financial mismanagement and has been ordered sold.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (SHNEYE’-dur-muhn) said Wednesday that Angel’s Gate owner Susan Marino misused $3.1 million in charitable donations.

A state Supreme Court judge in Cooperstown on Sept. 28 ordered the hospice in rural Delhi be dissolved and Marino barred from taking in rescue animals. The judge appointed a receiver to sell the 98-acre Angel’s Gate property, including Marino’s home there.

Marino ran the hospice for hundreds of chronically ill and crippled dogs and cats. She has denied misappropriation of funds and said, “Every penny went for the animals’ care.” She said in 2012 she was shutting down.
