CHARLOTTE, NC — Officials have identified the man who fired shots at a CMPD Officer.

Wilkinson Boulevard at West Morehead Street was shutdown Wednesday around lunchtime after a shootout between an officer and suspect.

Police say Darryll Douglas Clay, 33, was spotted in a vehicle matching a description of one seen around several home invasions. CMPD Officer Michelle Brcik approached the vehicle, Clay pulled a weapon, and a fight broke out.

Clay then ran through a wooded area and attempted to carjack several drivers nearby. That’s when he and the officer exchanged gunfire.

Police were able to subdue Clay and take him into custody.

Officer Brcik suffered a hand injury, and was transported to the hospital. Officials have not yet indicated the severity of the injury.

Clay is currently hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center for an illness that is unrelated to this incident, and will be charged upon his release.

Officials say this is an ongoing investigation.
