Politics and Barbecue at Mallard Creek

CHARLOTTE, NC — Politicians and barbecue… lots of barbecue.

A Mecklenburg County tradition continued Thursday at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church with the 86th Annual Mallard Creek Barbecue. More than 14,000 pounds of pork, 2,500 gallons of Brunswick stew and 2 tons of coleslaw, all feeding close to 20,000 people.

It’s a perfect chance for local politicians to make a late pitch to potential voters.

“Mallard Creek signals the beginning of what I call the race to the finish,” said Republican Mayoral candidate Edwin Peacock. “And it’s about getting voters activated. Mallard Creek is a great tradition here in Mecklenburg County. “

“This is old style politics. This is wonderful, because you get a chance to talk to folks one on one,” said Democratic Mayoral candidate Jennifer Roberts. “There’s a line they can go through when they’re going to get their barbecue where they can shake your hand. They can ask you their favorite question. They can look you in the eye.”

Early voting for the November 3rd election started Thursday and runs through the 31st.
