Teenage Driver Facing Charges In Fatal South Charlotte Wreck

UPDATE:  A 17-year-old driver has been charged following a fatal crash that happened early Sunday morning in South Charlotte.  

Police charged Abigail McGaha with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.  McGaha was released from the hospital Monday morning and booked in the Mecklenburg County Jail.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– A 16-year old died in a car crash early Sunday morning in South Charlotte.  

Police say the single car crash happened around 12:10 a.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Colony Road, near the intersection of Sharon View Road.

According to police, a 17-year-old was driving a 2013 Toyota Highlander southbound on Colony Road at a high rate of speed when they lost control of the vehicle and drove off the right side of the road.  The 17-year-old over-corrected back to the left and went off the roadway and hit a tree in the left rear passenger area of the vehicle.

The driver and front seat passenger were transported to Carolinas Medical Center where they are in stable condition.

16-year-old Alexander Mundt was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Police say that speed was a factor in the crash.
