KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez has left the team in the middle of the World Series to attend his father’s funeral in the Dominican Republic and spend time with his family. Daniel Volquez died yesterday, just before his son took the mound as the Game 1 starter last night.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) β Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) has returned to practice for the Titans after sitting out last week’s loss to Atlanta with a sprained ligament in his left knee injury. The rookie quarterback says the knee feels better as the 1-5 Titans prepare to take on Houston Sunday. Coach Ken Whisenhunt says Mariota will be evaluated throughout the week before a decision is made on if he’ll play Sunday.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) β Billy Donovan makes his NBA coaching debut when the Oklahoma City Thunder open the season at home against San Antonio tonight. Donovan spent 19 seasons coaching at Florida, leading the Gators two national championships, four Final Fours and seven Elite Eights.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Louisville basketball player Trey Lewis says athletic director Tom Jurich has assured players that Hall of Famer Rick Pitino will remain the Cardinals coach. Jurich’s backing comes as the Cardinals men’s basketball program is being investigated following allegations that a former staff member arranged for strippers and sex for recruits and players.
