CHESTER, SC – Family and friends gathered Saturday night to remember 11-year-old La’Darious Wylie. The boy was hit and killed by a car on the way to his bus stop on Ashford Street Tuesday morning.
Dozens of family and friends spent the evening singing, praying, and sharing memories. “We’re all in pain and shock,” explains Wylie’s grandfather Tommie Evans.
Investigators say the driver of the car, 57-year-old Michelle Johnson, drove off. She was later arrested and charged in the hit and run.
Family members say though they’re in pain, they have fond memories of the boy. La’Darius shared a love of football with his Grandfather. “On Sunday, we’d look at the game and stuff together. And then we’d always talk about who’s team gonna beat, stuff like that, you know, I’m gonna miss all that,” Evans explains.
Meanwhile parents and grandparents with kids at the bus stop are still trying to understand what happened. “My granddaughter, she’s traumatized, she’s devastated,” explains neighbor Peggy Johnson.
She says her granddaughter walked to the bus stop that morning with La’Darius and his sister. “The woman stopped. Looked back. Kept going. I mean, we’re all hurt by this,” she says.
