The Edgitators: Should Voting Be Mandatory?
In just a few hours, voters will head to the polls to elect a new Mayor of Charlotte. Democrat Jennifer Roberts and Republican Edwin Peacock are vying to be the city’s 5th mayor in two years. But Mecklenburg County tends to have low voter turnout, with less than 18 percent of registered voters showing up during the last mayoral election. Same goes for early voting. A little more than 18,000 people voted early this year.
Compare that to more than 23,000 people who cast their votes early in 2013. But some say there’s a possible solution to getting more people to the polls. Should voting be a requirement of citizenship? The Edgitators weigh in…
