A Fayetteville-area high school must forfeit its eight victories from the 2015 season because officials say it improperly reported players promoted from the junior varsity team to the varsity squad.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1HzfVJ2) the N.C. High School Athletic Association issued a statement Friday saying Pinecrest High School appealed to the association’s board of directors. The board upheld the policy.

According to the newspaper, rules allow schools to promote players from the JV team to the varsity in the event of injuries or illness. But if a player participated in a JV game, then dressed out for the varsity game, paperwork must be filed with the NCHSAA whether the athlete plays or not.

Meanwhile, Carrboro High School forfeited a game on Friday due to a lack of healthy players.
