49ers Football Seeking First C-USA Win on Homecoming

CONCORD, N.C. (WCCB Charlotte) — Despite a current four-game losing streak, the Charlotte 49ers remain upbeat before Saturday’s homecoming game against Southern Miss (4-3, 2-1).

It has something to do with the near win, 37-34, at Old Dominion last Saturday.

"We have a good football team, but we have to finish," head coach Brad Lambert said.

The team is more confident with the play of the offense. The offensive line is now healthy and running back Kalif Phillips ran for 204 yards at ODU, his third straight game of 100 or more rushing yards. Lee McNeil will get another start at quarterback. While he has yet to throw a touchdown in 2015, he feels he is catching on thanks to the ‘live-reps’ he now has under his belt in 2015.

"The past three games I have really learned about what defenses are going to do," junior quarterback Lee McNeil said. "I have spent alot of time in the film room and more than anything I think the experience has helped me."

The 49ers welcome Southern Miss, fresh off a 32-10 win over UTSA on Saturday, to town. The Golden Eagles have a pair of running backs, Jalen Richard and Ito Smith, who are dangerous. But its the quarterback who has gained the attention of the 49ers. USM’s Nick Mullens threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns last week as part of a 556 total yard effort

"They are coming on an up-tick," Lambert said."When you are playing a quarterback like this you have to apply some pressure. We are excited about another challenge."

The challenge will come in front of the home crowd on homecoming. The players want to do their part to show the fans they belong in FBS football and Conference USA

"We’re excited to show everyone that we are right there," junior linebacker Nick Cook said. "Two of our conference losses, we were right there (close to a win). The opportunity to get this win is really big."

Saturday’s game is at noon at Jerry Richardson Stadium. You can also watch the game live on WCCB.
