York Co. Passes Syrian Refugee Resolution

YORK COUNTY, SC — York County council members have approved a Syrian refugee resolution after hours of debate and public comment.

The resolution asks federal and state leaders to pass laws that would strengthen the screening process for refugees trying to enter the country. It also asks Governor Nikki Haley to continue to oppose resettlement in South Carolina until those screening measures have been implemented.

“This resolution is all about fear, and when we respond out of fear, that’s not a good thing,” said one speaker.

“A lot of my friends feel like this is a threat for the refugees to come here. We don’t want our children to have to sit in school and worry whether somebody’s going to attack them,” said another speaker.

The resolution also requests that each county in the state have the power to decide how funds may be used to assist refugees.
