Mothers of Murdered Offspring Remember Victims

CHARLOTTE, NC — The first day of 2016 was a solemn one for the families of local murder victims. CMPD investigated 62 murders in 2015. That’s 20 more than the year before.

Friday afternoon, nearly a hundred people gathered in Uptown to honor those who lost their lives to violence last year. Family members attached the name of their loved ones to balloons. Those balloons were then released over Frazier Park.

“It just felt powerful to know that I’m not by myself, and to know he is in heaven and he should possibly get those balloons,” said south Charlotte resident Ruqayyah Thomas.

“We’ve been doing this now for over 20 years, and it is to try and give importance back to life. We want people to know even though they aren’t here anymore, that we are still going to remember you, we’re not going to forget about you,” said Judy Williams from Mothers of Murdered Offspring.

Family members also got a chance to publicly remember each murder victim by saying their names and a few words about them at the ceremony.
