Police: Man arrested after stealing, wrecking patrol car

Kody Grayson

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– A man is in custody today after police say he stole and wrecked an officer’s patrol car early Friday morning.

Police say the officer was working off-duty at the White House Night Club around 2 a.m.

When the officer was called to respond to a fight at a neighboring business, 22-year-old Kody Grayson got into the officer’s unlocked, running patrol car and fled the scene.

The patrol car was found not long after crashed in the 3600 block of Scott Futrell Drive.

Grayson fled the vehicle on foot prior to officers’ arrival, according to police.   He was found in the 8300 block of Steele Creek Road and was treated by medic for a minor injury he sustained in the crash.

Grayson has been charged with larceny of motor vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger, resisting a public officer and hit and run.

Police say as with any officer-involved incident the case will be reviewed internally to determine if the officer followed protocol.
