SWAT Standoff in Mint Hill After Suspect Shoots at Police
MINT HILL, NC – A man opened fire on police early Saturday morning, leading to a SWAT standoff in Mint Hill.
41-year-old Edward Wold Jr. is locked up and charged with four counts of attempted First Degree Murder and Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
Investigators say a CMPD SWAT negotiator got him to surrender after a standoff at the Victoria Park Apartments on Stoney Trace Drive Saturday morning.
Police responded after a woman called 9-11 crying. Investigators say Wold fired at the first officer who arrived and continued to fire multiple rounds at police during the standoff.
A Mint Hill officer returned one shot but didn’t hit the suspect.
“We looked out to see what was going on. And all we could see was police running everywhere,” says neighbor Jemeriane Ardrey.
She awoke to the gunfire, then hid with her four kids. “It was pretty scary. It’s a very scary situation,” she explains.
The glass doors to the apartment building are shattered along with car windows in the parking lot.
Police evacuated some neighbors. “(A) SWAT policeman came right into my bedroom, whispering at me, ‘Just follow my instructions,'” explains Jose Santos.
Santos was startled from his sleep. “They drove me out, about a quarter of a mile up the road, and told me to, ‘get in the CATS bus, over there waiting on you,'” he says.
