Bring Pets Indoors During Frigid Nights

CHARLOTTE, NC — Don’t forget your pets! Dogs and cats are in danger if left outside in the extreme cold.

CMPD Animal Care and Control says pets can develop hypothermia and frostbite. The cold air can also cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin.

Bringing your pet indoors with you is best. Otherwise, they must have covered shelter with dry straw, shavings or blankets to trap heat.

“There have been a few calls that have come in for us to do animal welfare checks. To make sure these animals that are outside definitely do have the proper sheltering and things to get in and out of the cold,” said Melissa Knicely of CMPD.

Your pet can also get dehydrated, so check their water bowl often to make sure it doesn’t freeze over.
