CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dogs in the shelter are sporting new fleece coats, including Carolina Panther themed coats, in order to stay warm this winter.

Fleeces for Fido, an initiative created by Rachel Schul and Danielle Kleinrichert, provides fleece coats for Animal Care & Control’s shelter dogs.

Their goal is to make 300 coats to help keep shelter dogs toasty this winter. So far, they have donated 165 fleece dog coats.

Tips for keeping your pets warm this winter:

  • If possible, bring your pets inside during cold weather.
  • Make sure your pet’s water bowl does not freeze.
  • Outdoor pets need a sheltered place that is well-bedded with dry straw, shavings or blanket strips that trap warm air.
  • Check your pet’s bedding often and change it whenever it is wet.
  • Outdoor pets need more food during the winter because extra calories allow them to produce more body heat.
  • Dogs with very short coats have the least tolerance for cold. These breeds should not go outside without a sweater or a coat.
