Police: Suspect Fires More than 30 Shots at Officers

CHARLOTTE, NC — A third deadly shooting involving a CMPD officer in less than two weeks. This time, police say the suspect fired more than 30 shots. It happened on Forestbrook Drive in west Charlotte just after five o’clock this morning.

When police arrived, they say Carlton Murphy started shooting from the balcony of a second story apartment. Officer Jacob Meadors returned fire. Murphy then went back into the apartment.

The SWAT team found him dead inside. No officers or residents were hurt. Police don’t know who’s bullet killed Murphy.

Officer Meadors is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Another CMPD officer was involved in a shooting Sunday night in west Charlotte. Officer Jessica Zinobile was shot in the ankle while trying to serve an arrest warrant. Officers fired back, killing the suspected shooter, Germonta Wallace.

And on Christmas Eve, two groups opened fire inside Northlake Mall. An off-duty CMPD officer working security shot and killed Daquan Westbrook, saying Westbrook pointed a gun at him.
