It was perhaps the most emotional speech President Obama has ever given.Β First embracing the crowd of mass shooting victims and their families on hand, then openly crying as he made the case for new executive actions on gun control.
“And from every family who never imagined that their loved one would be taken from our lives by a bullet from a gun. Every time I think about those kids it gets me mad,” said the President.
The President has called for stricter gun control legislation repeatedly and unsuccessfully. Tuesday,Β he took action on his own to tighten up America’s background check system for buying firearms.
Under the President’s new executive actions: a warning to nearly all gun sellers to conduct background checks, or risk prosecution, plus $500 million for mental health care and additional manpower at the FBI and ATF to handle background checks around the clock.
Meanwhile, several Republicans on the campaign trail are rallying against the President’s plan.
“President Obama is once again going to abuse his power,” said Sen. Ted Cruz.
“When I’m elected President, on the first day, behind my desk, those orders are gone,” said Sen. Marco Rubio.
Here in North Carolina, the GOP is calling on Attorney General Roy Cooper to challenge the President’s executive action, saying it violates constitutional rights of Americans.
So, our Question of the Night: What do you think about President Obama’s plan to reduce gun violence in America?
