Is America Too Angry?
Thousands waited hours in line to see GOP hopeful Donald Trump speak at a packed house at Winthrop University Friday. Trump talked about several controversial issues, including gun control, immigration and his controversial call to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
A new FOX poll has Trump in the lead. Trump’s rise in the polls could have a lot to do with America’s anxiety over the current state of our nation.
A new survey from Esquire magazine and NBC News shows the majority of Americans no longer believe the “American Dream” is alive and well. Esquire’s senior editor, Richard Dorment, says that’s why Donald Trump is an “avatar of anger.”
“When you look at all the ethnicity, whites are the angriest of all Americans, with white women in particular being the angriest subgroup,” said Dorment. “But when you asked them why, the majority of white men and women get really angry when they say that the American Dream is not what it used to be. That America’s leadership role in the world is not what it used to be. And that life didn’t turn out for them the way that they thought it would be. This is the anger perceived diminishment. And it’s why a slogan like ‘Make America Great Again’ resonates so strongly with, you know, white, middle-class voters.”
On the flip side, there’s been a lot of anger and anxiety among black voters, too. Racial tension was the core of many tragic news events in 2015, when thousands protested police killings of unarmed black men like Freddie Gray in Baltimore and Walter Scott in North Charleston.
America’s hate seems to surpass other countries. A new study looking at the most popular words used on Twitter shows Canadians are more polite than Americans. In Canada, the most popular words used online are: “great”, “amazing” and “beautiful”. In America, it’s “hate”, along with a variety of swear words.
