Charlotte Remembers Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

CHARLOTTE, NC– The nation pauses to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, but Friday is his birthday.

The City of Charlotte paid tribute to the civil rights leader with a wreath laying ceremony at the MLK statue in Marshall Park. Dr. King would have been 87 years old Friday.

Lawana mayfield says says:”When you look at the city of Charlotte, we have grown so much, so how can we better reflect the diverse community that was talked about oh so long ago,” said Charlotte City Councilwoman Lawana Mayfield.

The remembrance festivities continue Saturday morning. Thousands are expected to attend the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade in Uptown. It’s been named an extraordinary event by CMPD.

The parade kicks off at 10:30am at the intersection of Ninth and Tryon Streets.
