STATESVILLE, N.C. — The Iredell County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the deputies and suspect in Tuesday’s fatal officer involved shooting on Virginia Ave.
The Sheriff says 55-year-old Samuel Grady was shot and killed Tuesday morning after he charged Deputies John Fletcher and Reggie Allen with a large knife while being served a final eviction notice. A third deputy, Roger Vargas, had also been called to the scene to assist.
The scene was then secured by multiple agencies from around the area.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office called in the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the investigation.
SBI investigators found a possible explosive device inside the home after serving a search warrant. It was later rendered safe by their Bomb Disposal Unit.
Deputies Fletcher, a 14 year veteran, Allen, a 16 year veteran, and Vargas, a three year veteran, have all been placed on Administrative leave with pay until the investigation is finished.
The Sheriff says at this point it appears that the deputies acted within policy and procedure of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
The policy states that when deputies are threatened with imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death to themselves or a third party they will respond to the threat accordingly.
The SBI is also conducting their own investigation into any criminal activity.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
