Police Release Name of Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting

STATESVILLE, NC — We now know the name of a man killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Statesville.

The Iredell County Sheriff says 55-year-old Samuel Edward Grady lunged at deputies with a large knife before they shot him. It happened Tuesday as the deputies tried to serve an eviction notice on Virginia Avenue.

“Nobody was in the shoes but those deputies,” said Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell. “And if they’re exposed to imminent danger, from their body and danger, and somebody attempts to harm them, they’re gonna respond, a lot times with deadly force. If they’re exposed to deadly force, they’re going to respond with deadly force.”

Deputies John Fletcher, Reggie Allen and Roger Vargas are on administrative leave during the investigation. That’s standard procedure.
