Fast Start Leads VCU Past Davidson, 79-69

Davidson's home winning streak of 14 is snapped by Atlantic 10's best.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In addition to a fast start, JeQuan Lewis scored 22 points, Melvin Johnson added 21 and Mo Alie-Cox had a double-double (18 pts, 11 rebs) as VCU ended Davidson’s 15-game home winning streak with a 79-69 victory over the Wildcats inside a sold out Belk Arena Friday evening.

The Rams raced out to a 29-7 lead before going to the half up, 38-28. VCU shot 53.1 percent in the period, while holding the Wildcats to just 8-of-28 (.286). Despite a stretch of more than 8 minutes without a field goal, Davidson closed the first half with 11 straight points capped off by consecutive 3-pointers from Jack Gibbs and Peyton Aldridge.

Gibbs paced Davidson (12-7, 4-4 A-10) with a game-high 37 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including six 3-pointers. It also marked the seventh time the nation’s fourth-leading scorer has gone over the 35-point plateau in his career.

Brian Sullivan (12) and Andrew McAuliffe (10) also contributed double figures for the Wildcats, who shot 41.4 percent, but drilled 11 treys.

VCU (16-5, 8-0 A-10), which shot 50 percent for the contest, held a 45-26 advantage on the glass and finished with 46 points in the paint.

After the Wildcats used a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to 57-55, with6:49 to play, VCU extended the margin back to double digits and put the game out of reach.

The Wildcats forced 17 turnovers, but committed 16 of their own.
