Do You Support Changing the Non-Discrimination Ordinance?

Charlotte considers adding protections for the LGBT community. City leaders and members of the LGBT community wrapped up a public forum Monday night to discuss those added protections. Council voted against a similar proposal in March of last year.

The current ordinance protects people from being discriminated against based on race, religion and national origin. It does not protect sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity.

LGBT supporters would like to see new language added that would allow members of the community to take cabs and use public accommodations like restaurants or restrooms without discrimination. But not everyone agrees.

The proposed changes would also prevent discriminating against contracting LGBT workers or businesses, and expanding the committee that protects theLGBT members. City council could vote on the issue as early as this month.
