CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD is partnering with Quick Trip Convenience Stores today to help prevent auto theft.
Police will be at four Quick Trip locations across Charlotte today to raise awareness about the increase in vehicle thefts happening due to people leaving their vehicles unattended, with keys in the ignition, while they warm them up during the winter.
Drivers who show officers their keys will be rewarded with coupons for free drinks provided by Quick Trip. Officers will also be discussing other Crime Prevention topics while handing out literature to drivers.
CMPD officials say they have seen a significant rise in vehicle thefts brought on by drivers leaving their cars unattended with the keys still in them. 85 cars were stolen because of this over the last three months, which is a 67% increase from 51 that were stolen during the same time period a year ago.
You can visit the following Quick Trip locations between 6:30-9:00a.m. this morning to participate in the event.
