49ers Rough up William & Mary to Win Opener, 7-3
Charlotte spots the Tribe a 2-0 lead but scores in the third, fourth and sixth innings to pick up opening day win.
CHARLOTTE, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — Charlotte had multi-run innings in the third, fourth and sixth frames on way to an opening day win, 7-3 , against William & Mary on Friday afternoon at Robert & Mariam Hayes Stadium.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, the 49ers loaded the bases with a single, WIlliam & Mary error and walk. Sophomore Brett Netzer delivered a two-out, three-run double to take the lead. It was one of two double’s on the day for the Fort Mill HS alum.
Charlotte first baseman Logan Sherer hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and catcher Derek Fritz added a two-run, single in the sixth inning to boost the lead.
Starter Sean Geoghegan struggled to start the game. He allowed William & Mary to load the bases in the first inning without recording an out. Geoghegan allowed two runs in the opening frame, however, he settled down and threw four scoreless frames to finish his debut. Geoghegan struck out four in five innings of work while allowing three hits and issuing two walks.
Game two of the three-game series between Charlotte and William & Mary is set for Saturday at 1pm.
